Victorian Sally Peers is set to make her WTA Tour debut at the Moorilla Hobart International after she was announced as the final main draw wildcard recipient.
The 17 year old joins fellow Australians Jessica Moore (WA) and Olivia Rogowska (VIC) in the main draw, alongside international players such as world No.13 Flavia Pennetta (ITA), [14] Patty Schnyder (SUI), [18] Anna Chakvetadze (RUS) and [25] Jie Zheng (CHN).
“Sally has made good progress in senior events over the past 12 months and this wildcard will provide her with the opportunity to get some experience against top international opponents,” Michael Roberts, Moorilla Hobart International Tournament Director, said.
“The tournament now has a fantastic line-up of young Australian women making their start on the tough WTA tour, and Tasmanian fans will undoubtedly get behind them,” he continued.
Peers, an Australian Institute of Sport Pro Tour member, enjoyed some success at senior level in 2008, winning the AMT in Rockhampton and reaching the semifinals of the Lenzerheide doubles (with Isabella Holland) and the quarterfinal of the women’s singles at the Pro Circuit event in Berri.
In juniors she reached the Wimbledon girls’ doubles final (with Holland) and won two junior doubles titles (with Holland and Heather Watson).
A member of the Optus Australian Fed Cup team in 2007 Peers was undefeated in the team’s Cup winning campaign in Italy.
Three more Australians, Anna Wishink (TAS), Marija Mirkovic (VIC) and Shannon Golds (QLD) are all in action in qualifying today hoping to join Peers, Moore and Rogowska in the main draw.
