Speaking at the Domain Tennis Centre, Tennis Australia CEO Steve Wood said he was pleased Tennis Australia could help secure the future of the world class event.
“I am proud to announce guaranteed funding for the Moorilla Hobart International for at least the next three years and a commitment to keep the event in Hobart in its current format,” Wood said.
“The Moorilla Hobart International is now well and truly established in the Tasmanian sporting calendar and this announcement will see it through to its 20th year and beyond.
“Full credit to Tennis Tasmania, the Tasmanian Government, Moorilla and the Tasmanian sporting public for their support in continuing to grow this event.
“I can promise you that as good as it is now, we are all going to continue to work together to further grow the Moorilla Hobart International,” Wood continued.
The announcement follows the $2.25 million investment to upgrade the Domain Tennis Centre facility made by the State Government at the 2009 tournament.
The first phase of the development has been completed including a new entrance, corporate stand and media facilities.
A permanent corporate grandstand has replaced the old stand, providing premium seating and world class views for corporate clients.
The media facilities have been upgraded to a glassed-in enclosure at the northern end of Centre Court allowing for up-to-the-minute reporting court side.
Moorilla Hobart International Tournament Director Michael Roberts said he was excited about the announcement and the future of the tournament.
“It’s exciting news. We’ve put a lot of effort into the redevelopment and it’s great that we can now plan ahead with the new facility and growing the event even further.”
