Jarmila Groth (AUS) and former champion Alicia Molik (AUS) have enjoyed a perfect start to the Moorilla Hobart International with comfortable victories in the first round.
Following a quarterfinals appearance in last week’s Brisbane International, Groth began the tournament with a straight sets victory against Johanna Larsson (SWE), 6-1 6-3 in 49 minutes.
“I was a bit nervous as I haven’t played here [in the main draw] before,” Groth said.
“I put a lot of pressure on my opponent and tried to keep errors to a minimum, [but] I think I still have a lot of things to improve technically and physically.”
Australia’s No.2 ranked player enjoyed her debut main draw appearance on Centre Court in front of a passionate crowd.
“A lot of people came to watch which is really exciting and I always enjoy the support. I’m just trying to play as good as I can so I don’t disappoint, and make them happy, excited and cheering.”
Molik also entered the second round by defeating Sofia Arvidsson (SWE) in straight sets, 7-5 6-3.
“I was pleased to come back late in the first set – when you do the right things in the match, the points prove themselves,” Molik said.
“I think I showed very positive signs today, particularly playing the important points well.”
Groth will now meet qualifier Tamira Paszek (AUT), who defeated tournament wildcard Olivia Rogowska (AUS) in straight sets today. Fellow Australian Sally Peers (AUS) was also defeated by a qualifier, while Shuai Peng upset No.3 seed Tsvetana Pironkova (BUL) in three sets.
Molik will meet Sara Errani (ITA) in the second round, after she defeated former champion Anna Chakvetadze on day one.
