The Italian duo of Roberta Vinci and Sara Errani will be looking forward to next month’s Fed Cup tie against Australia after claiming the doubles title at the Moorilla Hobart International.
The dynamic pair won their third doubles title by defeating Kateryna Bondarenko (UKR) and Liga Dekmeijere (LAT) in an exciting final, 6-3 7-5.
After racing to a 5-1 lead in the first set, Vinci and Errani faced a tougher test in the second set before closing the match in 1 hour and 12 minutes.
“[We played] more aggressive…it was difficult to play because there was a lot of wind,” Vinci said.
“Dekmeijere in the net was moving a lot so it was difficult to play on the baseline,” Errani said.
The tournament provided Vinci and Errani the perfect opportunity to experience the local conditions and test themselves against Australian pairings Sophie Ferguson and Alicia Molik, and Jessica Moore and Daniella Dominikovic on their way to the final.
Vinci and Errani will join forces once again when they compete in the women’s doubles at next week’s Australian Open before returning to Hobart for their Fed Cup tie.
“It’s not an easy match against Australia … [Sam] Stosur and [Jarmila] Groth are playing good tennis so it will be very difficult,” Vinci said.
