Australian Sacha Jones is through to a second round match-up with sixth seed Shahar Peer at the Moorilla Hobart International.
The former Kiwi, who only switched countries last week, beat German lucky loser Kristina Barrois 6-1 6-4, while Peer downed Czech Lucie Hradecka 6-3 6-1.
Jones led 1-0 and was up 4-3 in the second set before a rain delay of just under an hour.
She had raced to a 5-0 lead in the first but had to fight harder in the second set after winning her way into the main draw in qualifying.
But she always looked the stronger against a frustrated world No.89, whose second serve let her down badly.
Former champion Anna Chakvetadze breezed through her second round match against Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova, winning 6-3 6-2.
The Russian will play the winner of the Jones-Peer match in the quarterfinals.
