Qualifier Lauren Davis of America will progress to the next round of the Hobart Moorilla International after defeating Australian wildcard Bojana Bobusic in three sets.
The West Australian had an explosive start to the match, racing out of the blocks to take the first set 6-1.
“In the first set I was aggressive and hitting the ball deep and I think I got a bit too far behind the baseline in the second and especially at the end of the third set. I’ll just learn from it and plug away next week,” said Bobusic post match.
Davis, world No. 91, lifted the intensity in the second set pushing Bobusic around the court and off-footing her with clean-hitting and well-placed line shots. The American sprinted to a 5-0 lead before Bobusic won two consecutive games putting pressure on Davis to serve for the set. Davis held taking the second 6-2.
After missing several down the line shots, the American fell behind 2-4 in the third. Bobusic attempted to hold the lead with strong ground strokes but Davis made a comeback taking the final set to a tie break. Bobusic ran to 5-2 lead in the tiebreak but Davis kept the ball in the court overcoming the Aussie and taking the third 7-6(5).
Davis will play No.2 seed Sorana Cirstea tomorrow.
