Eugenie Bouchard has declared she has “zero expectations” as she prepares to make her Hobart International debut.
The Tasmanian town has been abuzz since it was announced the 21-year-old was entering the tournament in December. The former Wimbledon finalist has been touted as the event’s biggest draw card in its 23-year history.
Bouchard, a former world No.5, said she wasn’t feeling the pressure ahead of her first round match.
“I’m not even seeded, so not at all,” Bouchard said. “I’ve been surprised at how warm and welcoming everyone has been here, it’s been really nice to see. It makes me really happy to play here.”
Her first round opponent is 2011 finalist American Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
“I think I’ve played her a couple of times and lost every time, so I’m looking forward to hopefully doing better than that,” the world No.49 said.
“I know she can play a big game – she can have some big serves, some big forehands. I’m just looking forward to playing in Hobart for the first time and having a good match where I enjoy myself.”
Bouchard revealed her passion for the game was high after a 2015 season derailed by a confidence dip and injuries.
“I’m feeling good,” the Canadian said. “I worked really hard in the offseason to try catch up a little bit and I’m just so happy to be back on the court. That’s the most important thing. I’m grateful and excited to be back on tour.
“I just love the feeling of playing tennis. When you’re forced not to do something you love, you realise how much you truly love it and for me, how much I missed it.”
