Former Grand Slam champion Francesca Schiavone has joined the Hobart International 2017 field as a wildcard.
It is the third time Schiavone has competed in the tournament, following previous visits in 2009 and 2013.
“I’m very happy, it’s been a long time that I don’t come here,” the French Open 2010 champion told gathered media as she explored Hobart’s Cornelian Bay today.
“I can see the tournament is improving, with its structures, and I hope the weather can help us so you can see a good show from tennis.”

Schiavone, a four-time Fed Cup champion, reached a career-high ranking of No.4 in 2011 and has been a consistent top 100 force since 2000. She became the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam when she defeated Australian Sam Stosur in the Roland Garros final in 2010 and also reached the final in 2011, where she lost to China’s Li Na. Schiavone is also a former top 10 doubles player, with a career highlight of reaching the Roland Garros final alongside Australia’s Casey Dellacqua in 2008.
The 36-year-old had considered retirement after the 2016 season – but arrives in Australia excited and ready for her 22nd year on tour.
“I want to give myself another chance to dream again – it’s not easy, but I found the space in my heart,” she explained.
Schiavone said she felt fit and after three tough qualifying matches in Brisbane to start her season, believes the cooler weather in Hobart serves as an advantage.
“It’s harder,” she admitted when quizzed on the challenges of still competing on tour. “But when you have determination to do and to arrive at a goal… and you give the maximum, then the victories are coming – or I hope so.”
